The Fantastically Fun and Frustrating Fossil Record

Ryan Cox • April 23, 2021
Throughout the past school year, Matt Miles and I have been blessed to teach science class every couple of weeks for a Christian school in Oklahoma. Recently, we covered earth sciences with applications from the Global Flood (Genesis 6-9). As Matt taught about earthquakes, volcanoes, rocks, and minerals, he shared how the Flood laid down massive amounts of sediment around the world. Large deposits and formations of sedimentary rock span entire continents and could only have been deposited by the Global Flood.(1)

This session set up what I would cover in the following lesson – FOSSILS! Needless to say, the students and I thoroughly enjoyed studying the different types of fossils (petrified, preserved, carbonized, molded or cast, & trace fossils), all of which CTF was able to provide several examples for the students to hold or examine. This brought us to what has been discovered in the fossil record.

The fossil record is the cumulative knowledge of documented fossils. Excellent examples would be the data collected and provided by the Paleobiology Database and the Neotoma Paleoecology Database. These resources show the locations of documented fossil discoveries that have been submitted by contributors. The fossils span the globe with new discoveries constantly being added to these databases.

Now, as we taught the students, for a plant or animal to turn into a fossil, there needs to be (1) lots of mud brought by (2) lots of water (3) very quickly. If the specimen is not buried quickly in the sediment, it will be scavenged or decay.

Hmmm. Let’s see now: we have fossils found around the entire world on every continent, and they all had to be buried very quickly with lots of mud and water. Is there any explanation as to how every part of the planet at some point must have been covered by mud and water to produce fossils?    The Global Flood.

Not only does the fossil record testify of the Global Flood, it does great disservice to the myth of biological evolution.

  1. Each and every animal or plant that appears in the fossil record is fully formed, showing no signs of any evolutionary processes.(2,3)
  2. Once something appears, it remains it stasis – it never shows any evolutionary change.(4)
  3. Numerous animals, plants, etc. in the fossil record believed to be millions of years old in the evolutionary scheme are found alive today having gone through no evolutionary change (i.e., coelacanths, gar fish, bowfin fish, tuatara, etc.).(5)
  4. Animals are routinely found out of evolutionary order (i.e., mammals and birds found with dinosaurs).(6,7)
  5. Fossils are frequently found in marine sediments(8) and/or buried with marine fossils (i.e., T. rex fossils buried with 5 species of shark and 14 species of fish in eastern Montana).(9)
  6. The continued discovery of preserved biomaterial in fossils consistently invalidates any possibility of millions of years as the materials could only have survived for thousands of years at best.(10)
When it is realized that the fossil record is (1) over 95% marine organisms,(11) (2) covers the whole planet, and (3) was created by the rapid deposition of sediment laid down by water and mud flows, the historic account of the Global Flood becomes all the more supported while the fairy tale of evolution becomes all the more discredited.

Dr. Mark Ridley, professor of zoology and evolutionary biology at Oxford University and whose doctoral advisor was Richard Dawkins, admitted in New Scientist, “In any case, no real evolutionist, whether gradualist or punctuationist, uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of the theory of evolution as opposed to special creation”.(12)

Though the fossil record may be extremely frustrating and detrimental to the tenets of evolution, it is a consistent and faithful witness to Creation and the divine judgement of the great Global Flood.

lined up books

Over the course of time a person can accumulate many things. Most of the stuff we collect is meaningless to most everyone else, but when a person collects books, they can be treasured for a lifetime and even beyond. In this age of digital media, physical books seem to be less important to many people. Digital books are searchable, and copy/paste functions make it easy to use those great quotes. Yet, there is still something great about a physical book, things you can’t get digitally: the turning of pages, the feel of it in your hand, and the “book” smell. For our founder Dr. Sharp, physical books could never be replaced by digital. While my collection of books is growing each year, it is dwarfed by Dr. Sharp’s collection. Over the years he collected thousands of titles for research and enjoyment. Through the course of his ministry he had to sell his book collection a couple of different times to support his family, only to start collecting again when he was able to do so. When Doc passed his office full of packed bookshelves to me and said he would clear the shelves, I laughed out loud at the prospect of having loads of empty bookshelves. So I urged him to instead leave his books for my, and anyone else’s, use. Little did I understand that the four bookcases in my office were only a fraction of his entire collection. A couple of years back when Doc moved from his house, it was decided that his book collection would be stored at the office. Our thought was to establish a library, yet none of us had time to plan, organize and catalog all 79 boxes of books. They sat piled in his office until last year when my daughter Megan joined our ministry. She has a love of books, both reading and writing. So we offered her the task of cataloging and establishing Doc’s library. Can you picture me, a bbq lover, being offered a table full of succulent smoked offerings - brisket, sausage, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, turkey and all sides? Yep, that was Megan’s response to the library. For over four months she cataloged and organized the entire collection. The Dr. G. Thomas Sharp Library was completed earlier this year in his old office space, with overflow into my office. The entire 2700+ volume agglomeration is digitally cataloged for searching and locating. As you might expect, there is an extensive collection of creation and evolution subject matter, yet the library is full of many different categories. It very much reflects Doc’s love of gaining knowledge and research. An extensive commentary collection and multiple Biblical reference sections are invaluable to our ministry. There is even a whole bookcase housing books that are over 100 years old. Our desire was not to just house books but to also make a place of honor and inspiration. One wall exhibits Doc’s many diplomas, and throughout the library we have placed personal memorabilia of the mission trips he took over the years. Come, grab a book, relax in the sitting area and allow Doc’s handwritten notes from the margins or post-it notes bring a smile to your face. For those who may be more ambitious, Doc's office chair resides at the credenza for anyone to sit and be inspired to study. This is a place to honor Doc’s life and love for books. We at CTF have already utilized this great resource for further study, and we are so thankful to Diane and their family for donating these books for continued Kingdom growth. Blessings.
