In the late 1960s, George Thomas Sharp, Jr., who was serving at the time as a pastor and educator in Alabama, came face to face with staggering domestic problems in the lives of his students and church members. These problems compelled him to begin a search for causes, answers, and solutions to these challenges and attacks upon the Kingdom of God. This multi-decade endeavor culminated in the formation of Creation Truth Foundation, Inc.
Born on July 30, 1942 to George, Sr. and Ruth Sharp in Columbus, IN, George Jr. and his brother Greg were raised in a faithful home, through which a generational faith was imparted. On December 14, 1963, George married the love of his life, Diane. They would eventually have four children, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren to date.
The following years of teaching and ministry saw the Sharps come to an understanding that something extremely formidable existed deep within the culture, corrupting everything it touched. It appeared to them that the conservative evangelical community was helpless before its onslaught. Through multiple surveys and endless research, it was discovered that Bible-believing families throughout the United States were suffering the loss of 60–70% of their sons and daughters to secular thinking by the time they reached 15 years of age. Moreover, it was observed that the Christian father, the vital link in the family, intended in God’s divine design to provide headship, identity and purpose, was vanishing from his God-ordained place of leadership in both the family and the local church. In short, it became obvious that a primary target, if not the number one of Satan’s war with God, was the family – the quintessential key to everything else in society.
From 1975 to 1987, further research was undertaken while still engaging in ministry and education. In the 1980s, the Sharps moved from Alabama, helped get a school started in Syracuse, NY, taught in a Christian school in Noble, OK, then taught at Noble High School, preached for a year in Memphis, TN, and returned to teach at Bridge Creek High School in Blanchard, OK. All along the way, many steps of faith were taken to support the family. At one point, Doc sold his personal library to a church, he and his sons mowed lawns all summer to make ends meet, and Diane worked at the tag agency (for 13 years).
In the midst of this, while teaching during the week and preaching on the weekends, Doc attended classes at Oklahoma University and graduated with his masters in education in August of 1987. The very next month, he graduated from South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary with his PhD; he had been taking correspondence courses with them while attending classes at OU, while teaching classes at school!
His doctoral thesis, the culmination of his 12 years of study, would be published in book form: Science According to Moses. The years of study convicted Doc that Darwinian evolutionism had overthrown, in the name of “science”, the dominance of the Bible (Creation in particular) as the foundation of America’s worldview. Thus, by giving apparent "scientific" sanction to a mindset governed by situational ethics, the many ramifications of Darwinism have permeated every aspect of society. Therefore, the Bible-believing public needs awakened to the reality of true Biblical faith. Basic to this renewal is a return to all realities of Biblical Creation. If the God of sacred Scripture is our Creator, then He, and He alone, can be our Savior. Hence, the imperative for a return to the foundation (Genesis 1-12) of not only Biblical truth, but also the Gospel, became overwhelmingly apparent. Accordingly, after much prayer and counseling from numerous Christian leaders and parents, and with the help of longtime mentor Edward J. Kelly, Creation Truth Foundation was incorporated back in Alabama on August 9, 1989.
In Oklahoma, the administration at Bridge Creek was very generous, allowing Doc to take off several days throughout the school year to preach and teach. However, a change in administration rescinded the generous leeway previously afforded to him. Therefore, in great faith, Doc went full-time with CTF in 1994. Not long after, Doc collaborated with Joe Taylor, who operated a fossil museum in Crosbyton, TX, to set up fossils for an event in which Doc would teach. From this came the idea of taking fossils to other places to see if doors would be opened to share Doc’s message and maybe bring in those who might never come hear a guest speaker, but might come see fossils and then stay to listen to the presentation. The trial runs were a great success, and Doc and his son Thomas began the process of acquiring fossils for the ministry. In 1998, the Mobile Museum of Earth History began touring the nation.
It should be noted that the Sharp family made many significant sacrifices for the ministry. But Diane would have you know, though she sometimes might have worried where the money would come from for the $8,000 fossil payments, Doc always slept soundly, never worrying about the Lord’s provision. And through the faithfulness of God and His people, the Lord always provided with so many generous friends of the family and ministry. Diane in conversation and Thomas at Doc's memorial listed name after name after name of those who so richly blessed them and the ministry.
In addition to all this, Doc helped publish books, videos, the Truth In Science school curriculum, led countless field trips, started museums in Eureka Springs and Dallas, and established in 2005 the Institute of Biblical Worldview Studies, which has graduated well over 100 students from its two-year Cadre program. Most of these graduates are defending God’s Word in their churches, especially in the Creation/Evolution debate. And beyond all this, Doc somehow found time to preach and teach abroad, including Russia, Mexico, Romania, Guatemala, Canada, the Philippines, and Haiti. It would be impossible to chronicle all of his endeavors that have touched thousands upon thousands around the globe.
In January of 2018, Dr. Sharp officially retired from Creation Truth Foundation. After decades of full-time teaching, preaching, and traveling, Doc and Diane would spend the next 7 years simply enjoying life together, traveling to see friends and family, all the while still edifying and encouraging so many of the faith. On February 12, 2025, Dr. George Thomas Sharp, Jr. entered into his eternal rest.
His master said unto him,
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
